It is well known that rework and repair performed on electronic assemblies can cause latent defects, increasing risk of periodic product field failures. This problem can be reduced if these tasks are performed by qualified and certified personnel.

In 2019 IPC introduced a new type of certification – Certified Standards Expert (CSE). A holder of a CSE certificate is a person who has the required knowledge and skills to be able to act as an expert in one or more IPC-standards. The person

·       Is an expert in a specific standard (or more)

·       Is utilizing one or more standards to accommodate company specific requirements

·       Is a link between the company and the industry

·       Keeps the company updated with respects to the newest revisions of standards used, and best industry practices

·       Gives feedback to workgroups and committees working with the development and updating of IPC standards

·       Communicates with designers and process engineers

·       Settles organizational conflicts and offers expertadvice based on IPC standards

The following items will be theoretically and practically reviewed during the certification:

·      Product classification, required skill level, tools and materials

·      Handling of mounted assemblies

·      Basic removal methods for surface and hole mount components

·      Mounting and soldering surface and hole mount components

·      Solder land preparation and component placement

·      Primary heating methods, such as conductive and convection heating

·      Procedures for reworking chip and MELF component types

·      Procedures for reworking SOIC / SOT and QFP component types

·      Wire splicing procedures

·      Circuit and laminate repair

·      Removal and repair of conformal coating

When the theoretical test as an IPC Expert has been passed, a certificate valid for two years will be issued. Please note that the test for this certification is time limited!

The course is specifically aimed at experienced operators, designers and quality engineers who need to demonstrate a documented knowledge of requirements in IPC-7711/7721.
